Hull's NWOBHM "legends" Salem - recording further new tracks - booked at festivals in Italy and Germany

Salem was founded in late 1979 by two former members from the “Metal for Muthas” stars Ethel The Frog – Paul Tognola (vocals and guitar) and Paul Conyers (drums). Adrian Jenkinson was drafted as the bass player and the first band meeting with Paul Macnamara (lead guitar) was 2 January 1980 in The Red Lion pub in Anlaby, Hull, Yorkshire.

This line-up – after a period of song writing and rehearsal – began gigging in Hull and district, and recorded the first demo on 4 January 1981 at Fairview Studios in Willerby, Hull (where Def Leppard recorded their first music).

Simon Saxby (vocals) joined Salem following Paul Tognola’s departure for The Crack in March 1981 and the band continued to perform.

However, the Salem sound was founded on two guitars and twin-lead melodies so Mark Allison joined to add that depth. This line-up gigged regularly and released its own double A-side single “Cold As Steel / Reach For Eternity” in 1982, recorded on 4 April 1982 at Fairview Studios. Paul Macnamara was interviewed by Kerrang! – soon to become the world’s biggest selling weekly rock magazine – in May 1982 (No. 15) and singles were sold globally.

Paul Conyers had to leave due to other professional commitments and Paul “Animal” Mendham took up the drum stool.

This final Salem line-up continued to gig prolifically in the North and North East of England with a hardcore of fans. They soon recorded another demo at Adda Studios in east Hull, for the first time capturing the fans’ favourite “The Keeper of the Keys”. This raw session caught the passion of the live performances.

As a result of Salem winning a “battle of the bands” at Huddersfield Polytechnic, Salem recorded the last demo at September Sound, Huddersfield, in March 1983, which best demonstrated the maturing song writing of the band. Although a number of record companies gave the music the green light, the band imploded and played their last, sell-out gig in Hull on 31 May 1983.

In June 2010, High Roller Records and Pure Steel Records released the remastered recordings by Salem on the double-album “In The Beginning …” on vinyl and CD.

The band played it first gig in 27 years in hometown Hull in November 2010.

In 2011, Salem recorded three new tracks (available on a limited edition EP) and played again at The Adelphi on 9 December.

Salem is currently recording further music and booking gigs, including the Heavy Metal Festival V in Italy and Metal Shock in Germany.

Biografia

"Banda de metal clássico procura guitarrista solo" e "Banda à procura de solista de guitarra", foram as linhas que reuniram Jorge Canela, Fernando Santos e Hugo Torrado (guitarra, baixo e vocal, respectivamente), o núcleo interno dos Kameleon. Jorge, à procura de um novo projecto, rapidamente percebeu que tanto Hugo e Fernando tinham um enorme potencial, não explorado pelas suas actuais bandas e apresentou-lhes a idéia de criar algo a partir do zero. Ambos ficaram entusiasmados com a idéia, e decidiram experimentá-lo. O resultado não poderia ter sido melhor: a química de composição foi imediatamente visível, com "Am I" (faixa n º 7 do homónimo álbum de estréia), a ser concluída em duas horas, com uma gravação demo terminada dentro de uma semana. Harmonia, melodia e ritmo foram sendo trocados com facilidade, assim como os diversos pontos de vista. Mesmo as questões estilísticas e técnicas pareciam encontrar uma confluência natural. Com tudo a progredir muito rápido, levantou-se a questão de encontrar um baterista com a capacidade de lidar com esse ritmo. Boa capacidade técnica, forte performance ao vivo, o conhecimento de teoria musical, a experiência de estúdio e da capacidade de aprender depressa eram difíceis de encontrar, e o processo de audição provou exactamente isso. Audições extensas, com 17 percussionistas a serem ouvidos por um período de 6 meses, durante o qual o álbum foi composto e gravado, e Ricardo Reis (bateria) foi adicionado ao line-up da banda.

Ricardo é um baterista de sessão monstruoso, cuja habilidade técnica e criatividade na bateria vai espantar todos. Tocar uma batida paradiddle Latina em cima de uma secção half-time de metal puro, e fazê-la soar bem, não é nada fácil. Hugo é dono de uma bela voz, melódica e clara. Traz à banda influências de pop/rock clássico dando assim aos Kameleon uma diversidade pouco comum. Fernando é um músico de turnê realizado, tendo passado 14 anos na estrada com projectos diferentes e músicos, tocando vários instrumentos, uma prova de sua formação musical bem arredondada. Jorge é compositor, engenheiro e multi-instrumentista com influências de Prog Metal pesado e Neo-clássico que se ocupa  de diversos cargos na banda (compositor, arranjador, editor de gravação, pré-mixer, produtor). Um autêntico homem dos setes ofícios!

A música e letra dos Kameleon torna-se fácil de se relacionar com quase todos os que ouvem música rock, sendo simples e complexa ao mesmo tempo. A acessibilidade das estruturas do Pop / Rock da música, construção harmónica e melódica, juntos com virtuosismo, performances instrumentais impecáveis e o uso imprevisível de ligeiras mudanças na estrutura tornam difícil parar de ouvir. Kameleon também é variado. Classic, Thrash, Nu, Prog, Neo-clássico: todo o Rock e Metal aparecem em doses equilibradas, para evitar que o ouvinte se sinta aborrecido. Você pode encontrar Maiden, Metallica, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Nickelback, Whitesnake, Dream Theater, Symphony X e Hoobastank, todos juntos pelas letras introspectivas e socialmente críticas de Hugo.

Biography

"Classic Metal band looking for lead guitar player" and "Band looking for guitar soloist" were the lines that brought together Jorge Canela, Fernando Santos and Hugo Torrado (guitar, bass and vocal respectively), the inner core of Kameleon. Jorge, looking for a new project, quickly realized that both Alvaro and Fernando had a huge potential, untapped by their current bands and presented to them the idea of creating something from the ground up. Both were enthusiastic about the idea, and agreed to try it out. The outcome couldn't have been better: the songwriting chemistry was immediately visible, with "Am I" (track #7 of their self-produced, self-titled debut album) being completed in a couple of hours, with a demo recording finished within the week. Harmonic, melodic, rhythmic ideas were bouncing back and forth with ease and even stylistic and technical viewpoints seemed to find a prompt confluence. With things going terribly fast, this left them with the issue of finding a drummer that could cope with this pace. Good technical ability, strong live performance, music theory knowledge, studio experience and the ability to learn stuff fast were difficult to come accross, and the audition process proved just that. Extensive auditions, with 17 drummers being heard over a period of 6 months were set-up, during which the album was composed and recorded, and Ricardo Reis (drums) were added to the band's lineup.

Ricardo is a monster session drummer, whose technical ability and creative drumming will blow minds away. Getting away with a Latin paradiddle beat on top of a half-time, pure metal section, and having it sound right, isn't easy! Hugo is the bearer of a beautiful voice, melodic and clear. He brings classic pop/rock influences to the table, giving Kameleon an unusual diversity. Fernando is an accomplished touring musician, having spent 14 years on the road with different projects and musicians, playing several instruments, a proof of his well rounded musical training. Jorge is a songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and audio engineer with heavy Prog Metal and Neo-classical influences that takes up loads of band jobs (composer, arranger, recording, editor, pre-mixer, producer). A musical workhorse!

Kameleon's music and lyrics make it easy to relate to just about everybody who listens to rock music, being simple and complex simultaneously. The accessibility of pop/rock song structures, harmonic and melodic construction, tied together with virtuosity, top-notch instrumental performances and the unpredictable use of slight structure changes make it difficult to stop listening to. Kameleon is also varied. Classic, Thrash, Nu, Prog, Neo-classical: all things Rock and Metal appear in balanced doses, to prevent the listener from being bored. You can find Maiden, Metallica, Linkin Park, Evanescence, Nickelback, Whitesnake, Dream Theater, Symphony X and Hoobastank in there, all tied together by Alvaro's both introspective and critical lyrics.

This first album is but a sample of the great things this band can do. 9 tracks running just over 47 minutes. Doesn't seem much, does it? But what if we told you they have another 20 tracks (written and recorded) in store for release this year? We're guessing you'll just have to wait and see...

DR SIN - Do Brasil para o mundo!!!

Por muitas vezes foram aclamados como melhores músicos e melhor banda pelas revistas especializadas. É quase impossível ler uma revista de música, sem ver as entrevistas e os anúncios do DR SIN. A primeira apresentação brasileira na grande mídia foi durante o festival Hollywood Rock, em 1993, onde dividiram o palco com Nirvana e L7. Isso era tudo que precisavam para mostrar ao mundo que estavam prontos para o rock.

Durante aquelas noites, DR.SIN realizou concertos inacreditáveis. Em 1993, arriscaram-se a ir para os EUA. E, após alguns concertos por lá, assinaram com a Warner International e o álbum (DR SIN) foi lançado em nove países. Seu segundo álbum (BRUTAL) foi lançado no Japão sob o nome de (SILENT SCREAM), seguido pelo álbum (INSINITY) e o álbum ao vivo (LIVE IN BRAZIL). O álbum (LIVE IN BRAZIL) fez parte de um /box-set/ de Yngwie Malmsteen.

Todos esses álbuns, vídeos, concertos e festivais ajudaram DR SIN a alcançar mais e mais sucesso e um número cada vez maior de fãs. O álbum (INSINITY) teve participações muito especiais. Uma delas foi Jonnathan Mover (ex baterista do Joe Satriani, Alice Cooper, Saigon Kick e Einstein) na música “Imnsonia”, outra, Silvio Luiz, um dos comentaristas brasileiros de esportes mais famosos, na música “Futebol, Mulher e Rock’n’Roll”, que se tornou um dos grandes /hits/ da banda. Em 2000, DR SIN lançou no Brasil, de um modo bem singular, outro álbum (DR SIN II). Foi distribuído em bancas de jornais por todo país.

Desta vez, o novo trabalho continha uma surpresa, Michael Vescera nos vocais, um famoso cantor americano, ex integrante de Yngwie Malmsteen, Loudness, Obsession e MVP. Outros convidados especiais foram Sergio Buss (Steve Vai, Tritone) e Roland Grapow (atual Masterplan e ex integrante do Helloween).

Esse CD tornou-se um grande sucesso. Em 2002, foi a vez de um DVD e um álbum duplo, gravado durante um concerto realizado em São Paulo, em homenagem aos 10 anos da banda, intitulados (10 ANOS AO VIVO). Esse show teve um convidado muito especial, André Matos (ex Angra/Shaaman), cantando um dos grandes /hits/ do DR SIN, chamado “Fire”. O CD seguinte foi compilado com covers que possuem a palavra DOCTOR em seus títulos, tais como “Calling Dr.Love” (KISS), “Rock and Roll Doctor” (BLACK SABBATH), “Dr Feelgood” (MÖTLEY CRUE), “Doctor, Doctor”(UFO), “Dr.Roberts” (BEATLES), “Somebody Get Me a Doctor” (VAN HALEN), entre outros.

Em 2007, DR SIN lança (BRAVO), seu oitavo álbum, que foi concebido baseado nos fatos e sentimentos que o ser humano experimenta no seu dia-a-dia. É um álbum pesado e poderoso. É muito criativo e mistura técnica com excelentes melodias.

No ano de 2009 é lançado o álbum Original SIN, regravação do álbum DR SIN I com duas faixas bônus “Nephelins” e “You Are My Love” além dos sucessos que consagraram a banda “Emotional Catastrophe”, “You Stole My Heart”, “Howlin in the Shadows” e “Scream & Shout”

Atualmente o ultimo lançamento da banda é o álbum (ANIMAL) que apresenta muitas novidades e um som que definitivamente faz jus ao título. Essa é fórmula inigualável do DR SIN, que é, sem dúvida, um grande orgulho para os brasileiros e que está pronto para conquistar o mundo!
